We invite you to attend the 2nd international conference on Key Competencies-Skills for Life, London 19-10 June 2008, organised in partnership with NIACE. The challenge of ensuring that citizens and employees are equipped with the skills and competencies needed to live and work in the 21st century has never been more urgent. Demographic trends, global competition and technological advances make it imperative to raise the level of skills and ensure that these are maintained in line with rapid evolutions in today’s knowledge society. The first International Conference was held at City University, London in July 2007. Research institutes, universities, consulting companies, technology solutions suppliers, adult education institutes, international and national government departments, schools, colleges, industry, accrediting bodies and trade unions, were represented by delegates from 21 countries. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the event, and a desire to continue international co-operation in this vital area. Key conference themes for 2008:

This year's conference challenge is "breaking boundaries for human capital development and social innovation." The objective is to explore how digital technologies, and in particular ePortfolios and digital identities, are transforming individual and organisational learning and development. To challenge our ideas, we will have the pleasure of welcoming Stephen Downes as keynote speaker. Stephen is perhaps best known for his daily research newsletter, OLDaily (short for Online Learning Daily), which reaches thousands of readers across Canada and around the world. His work also includes the development of educational content syndication systems such as Edu_RSS and DLORN and the design of a digital rights management system for learning resources. Stephen is also frequently to be found the road giving seminars and lectures on the field of online learning -- he spoke at the ePortfolio Montréal conference in May 2008. Helen Barrett will be also providing a master class on ePortfolios and the use of Web 2.0 tools. Recently retired from the faculty of the College of Education at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Helen is now living in the Seattle area and works as international consultant. She has been researching strategies and technologies for electronic portfolios since 1991, publishing a website, an Apple Learning Interchange exhibit, chapters in several books on Electronic Portfolios, and numerous articles. |
