Themes

The conference is organised in partnership with the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) at Concordia University and the Centre de recherche en informatique de Montréal (CRIM). Tracks will be run in French and English. Presenters and authors are invited to submit an abstract of their contributions by 31 January 2008 on the following themes:

Tracks will be run in French and English. Presenters and authors are invited to submit an abstract of their contributions by 21 February 2008 on the following themes:

  1. Lifelong learning and employability ePortfolios – how can the ePortfolio contribute to secure learning and career paths? What skills and competencies do learners, educators, instructional designers, human resource managers need to develop to harness the real power of the ePortfolio? Do ePortfolios demand and enable new pedagogical approaches? Employability, transparency of qualifications, mobility, continuing professional and personal development will be discussed in this track.
  2. Building systems of recognition and accreditation with ePortfolios - how does the ePortfolio contribute to formal and informal recognition of competencies and talents? Accreditation of prior learning, authentic assessment, assessment as learning, recognition vs accreditation, informal vs formal recognition will be some of the themes that will be discussed.
  3. Exploiting the full potential of digital identity – how can individuals and organisations maximise the use of their personal data? Social networks, learning portfolios, personal health records, privacy, authentication and trust are among the key themes of this track.
  4. ePortfolio architectures and advanced technologies – shall we built our ePortfolio in Second Lifetm? Mobile learning, Web 2.0, knowledge media, semantic web, virtual worlds, personal learning spaces, podcasts, blogs, wikis, new media, user-generated contents, social networks, interoperability, aggregation vs integration are some of the key ideas that will be discussed in this track.
  5. Designing ePortfolio strategies within regions and sectors - what are the benefits of territorial (local, regional or national) and sectoral ePortfolio deployments? What ePortfolio services should be deployed on a territorial rather than organisational level? What can we learn from ePortfolio developments in the health sector? This track will also address the issues of policies, learning regions, sectoral and international collaboration as well as ePortfolio for SMEs.
  6. Managing knowledge with ePortfolios – how can the ePortfolio contribute to organisational learning? How does the ePortfolio support the construction and sharing of knowledge within and across research and professional communities? Formal and informal learning, quality improvement, business transformation, communities of practice, collaborative learning will be among the principal themes highlighted.

Theme #1: Lifelong learning and employability ePortfolios

The objective of Lifelong learning and employability ePortfolios is to explore the role of ePortfolios across different episodes and transitions of one’s lifelong learning. A central issue should be the way ePortfolios encourage individuals’ autonomy and responsibility.
The following topics are suggested:

  • Managing and exploiting formal, informal and non-formal learning opportunities
  • Moving across learning environments and episodes
  • Lifelong learning, continuing professional development, personal development planning
  • Pedagogical strategies for ePortfolios
  • Developing key competencies, key skills, employability skills and skills for life

The objective of Building systems of recognition and accreditation with ePortfolios is to explore the contribution of ePortfolios to formal and informal recognition processes. A central issue should be the role ePortfolios play in informal recognition within social networks.
The following topics are suggested:

  • Authentic assessment and assessment as learning
  • Quality assurance of assessment processes
  • Recognition and validation of prior experience
  • Informal recognition of competencies
  • Social networks

Theme #3: Exploiting the full potential of digital identity

The objective of Exploiting the full potential of digital identity is to explore the link between ePortfolios and the other components of one’s digital identity. A central issue should be the exploitation, controlled by individuals, of their personal data.
The following topics are suggested:

  • Components of a digital identity: personal health records, professional records, ePortfolio, etc.
  • Educating for the management of digital identity
  • Developing a professional identity through social networks
  • Authentication of statements, certificates, etc.
  • Building trust
  • Managing multiple identities -- federation of identities
  • Exploitation of identities - federation of services
  • Protection of personal data
  • Individual, community and organisational digital identity
  • Digital and cultural identity

Theme #4: ePortfolio architectures and advanced technologies

The objective of ePortfolio architectures and advanced technologies is to explore the impact of ePortfolio on learning systems design as well as that of emerging technologies in ePortfolio thinking. A central issue should be the exploration of the interaction between ePortfolios, ePortfolio management systems, ePortfolio organisers and multiple information systems.
The following topics are suggested:

  • Building and exploiting ePortfolios in virtual worlds
  • Mobile technologies for agile ePortfolios
  • Social networks and peer to peer technologies
  • Semantic web and ePortfolio ontologies
  • Aggregation vs integration
  • ePortfolio discovery services
  • Interoperability

Theme #5: Designing ePortfolio strategies within regions and sectors

The objective of Designing ePortfolio strategies within regions and sectors is to explore the benefits of territorial (local, regional or national) as well as sectoral ePortfolio deployments. A central issue should be the exploitation of ePortfolios across a large number of institutions and organisations.
The following topics are suggested:

  • What ePortfolio services should be deployed at local, district, regional and national levels?
  • What can we learn from ePortfolio developments in the healthcare sector?
  • ePortfolio for learning regions
  • ePortfolio for industry and service branches
  • ePortfolio for migration and mobility
  • Bridging the digital divide

The objective of Managing knowledge with ePortfolios is to explore the contribution of ePortfolios to the management of organisational knowledge and learning. A central issue should be the link between individual and organisational learning and quality as a learning process.
